We are beyond proud to celebrate Agondeze Geoffrey, a young man born with bilateral clubfoot in rural Western Uganda, has officially graduated with an ISPO Category II Certification and a Bachelor’s Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the National Institute of Social Affairs (NISA) in Cambodia.
Geoffrey was born with bilateral clubfoot and grew up in rural Kyenjojo District, Western Uganda, where accessing treatment was nearly impossible. Stigma was common, and families like his had very limited resources. His mother often walked more than 50 km to Buhinga Hospital (the regional referral facility) sometimes over two days, in search of treatment that unfortunately was not available at the time.
Growing up, Geoffrey faced physical pain, school bullying, long walks to class, emotional hardship, and community discrimination. Yet, he persisted. Supported by his parents, he pushed through every obstacle.
Years after completing high school, and with no hope of affording university, Geoffrey received the opportunity of a lifetime. His former head teacher connected him to Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC), which was recruiting young people with disabilities for specialised training in prosthetics and orthotics.
He applied, excelled, and was selected. With support from KCDC he traveled to Cambodia in 2022 to begin a three-year professional journey that transformed his life.
From 2022 to 2025, Geoffrey studied anatomy, biomechanics, fabrication, patient care, and advanced prosthetic and orthotic design. He adapted through culture shock, language barriers, and intense practical training.
Highlights of his studies include:
- Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Prosthetics & Orthotics
- Passing the ISPO Category II International Certification
- Completing clinical placements and treating over 27 patients
- Serving as President of the Student Association, advocating for inclusion and equality
Geoffrey’s graduation marks a historic milestone for the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department at Kyaninga Mobility, as he becomes one of our first internationally certified prosthetists/orthotists to rise from a lived disability experience within our community.
His international training will greatly strengthen our Prosthetics Department, to provide more advanced and affordable prosthetic and orthotic services, train more local technicians, and offer specialised rehabilitation to children and adults with disabilities.
We express our deepest gratitude to all sponsors, partners, and friends of KCDC and Kyaninga Mobility for your support to create this life-changing journey.
“Disability is not inability. With support, determination, and opportunity, you can overcome anything.Never neglect a child with a disability. Your love and encouragement can shape their entire future.” Geoffrey
