This year, we celebrate a truly special milestone—10 years of Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC)

A decade ago, we poured our hearts into the vision of a world where children with disabilities and their families could thrive—free from stigma, discrimination, and the barriers that limit their potential.

Since our founding in 2014, this decade-long journey has been one of resilience, growth, and collaboration, made possible by our amazing Kyaninga Family. Together, we’ve championed the rights of children with disabilities (CWDs) and their families through three transformative programs:

  1. Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR): Covering over 1,000 square kilometres in western Uganda, this program promotes functional independence, Increases financial & food security, strengthens families, and encourages primary school enrollment for children with disabilities.
  2. Kyaninga Inclusive Education Hub (2020): Born from the success of CBR, the Hub addresses the critical issue of low school attendance for Ugandan CWDs, which stands at just 9%, by fostering inclusive learning environments through the mentorship and training of local teachers.
  3. Kyaninga Mobility: Tackling the lack of assistive devices in East Africa, Kyaninga Mobility designs, tests, and manufactures bamboo wheelchairs and other devices to give independence and dignity to children and persons with disabilities.

Over the past decade, we’ve seen countless lives transformed. Children who once faced barriers step into new opportunities, families find hope, and communities embrace inclusion. The continuous demand and need for these services have fueled our growth and innovation.

Our journey hasn’t been without challenges, but every obstacle has brought new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities that have helped us grow stronger.

To mark this milestone, we hosted a celebratory event in Fort Portal City, an awareness march that united partners, government officials, children, and families we serve.

Over 200 participants, led by the vibrant UPDF 4th division Muhoti Barracks Army Band, joined us to march from St. John’s Cathedral Church to Booma Grounds. The event was highlighted by beautiful performances from our children at Booma Grounds.

Thank you to the Rwenzori Special Needs Foundation, Fort Portal City Officials, Kabarole District Officials, YAWE Foundation, Tooro Babies Home, Canon Apolo Demonstration School, Uganda Red Cross, Buhinga Primary School, Bantwana, Fort Portal Tv, and St. Peter and Paul School for marching and celebrating with us.

We look back with overwhelming gratitude for the lives we’ve touched and the impact we’ve made — reaching over 7,000 children and their families and achieving a 25% improvement in their quality of life.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the families who have trusted us to be part of their journeys and the incredible support of our partners.

Yet, we know this is only the tip of the iceberg. The journey ahead calls us to do even more, and we invite you to join us in this rewarding mission to create an even greater future for children with disabilities and their families.

Thank you for being part of this journey—we couldn’t have done it without you!
